Each year over 1.5 billion tyres reach the end of their useful life. These End-of-Life Tyres (ELT) can be reused to a certain point, but not endlessly. Therefore, the disposal of waste tires is an enormous global challenge.

Many tires get landfilled, causing pollution to the local surface and groundwater. Nowadays this is illegal under EU waste directives, but it is still done in other parts of the world. In Africa the dumping of tyres results in major health issues as well, because malaria mosquitos breed in them creating all kind of diseases.

Almost 70% of the ELTs are simply incinerated, to generate electricity or heat in steelworks. Not only does this procedure release massive amounts of CO2, it is extremely wasteful as well. Tyres contain valuable resources, including steel and carbon black, a fine powder used to provide structure in the manufacturing of tyres and as a colorant by the plastic and paint industry.

With the vehicle population rising and the rising popularity of electric cars, which are heavier than conventional cars. A serious problem occurs as tyres will deteriorate faster.

Pyro One is able to deliver circular ELT solutions to the market with its installation. Instead of throwing away the resources of tomorrow, as happens in the linear economy, Pyro One brings the circular economy to tyres by recycling the ELTs.

Furthermore, the plant of Pyro One contributes to a circular economy because it is self-sufficient. The syngas which is produced by processing the shredded ELT, can be used to keep the plant up and running.

Pyro One is a - self-sufficient - no waste - installation that has combined various processes and has therefore been able to build an optimized pyrolysis plant!
