Xanthan gum is an extracellular acidic heteropolysaccharide produced by the fermentation of xanthomonas campestris bacterium. Made from corn starch and other carbohydrates through the processes of culturing, extracting, evaporating and grinding, it is widely used in industries such as food, oil, mining, pharmacy and textile. In oil industry, Xanthan gum is used to thicken drilling mud, to change the rheology and to prevent washout. Xanthan gum is able to carry the solids cut by the bit back to the surface. After the circulation stops, it is able to keep the solids expanded in the drilling fluid. |
