Application | ||
---|---|---|
It has been used to reduce ketones, aldehydes, Schiff bases, carboxylic acids and esters, acid chlorides, disulfides, nitriles, and inorganic anions. For many of these substrates, only gentle reaction conditions are required. In the industry, sodium tetrafluoroborate is used in brazing, in the manufacture of glass and frits, treatment of glass and metal surfaces, sand casting of aluminium and magnesium. In addition, it can be used in wood preservative treatment. It is also being used in synthesizing different organic salts and ionic liquids, which in turn can be used as a green solvent in chemical reactions. In the 1940s it was introduced for wartime applications and was a very important reagent by 1970, which qualified it for a lengthy review |
Description | ||
---|---|---|
Sodium tetrafluoroborate is a white ionic powder that is hygroscopic and reacts with strong oxidizing agents. In addition, it is an ionic compound that can be synthesized by reacting fluoroboric acid with sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate. Sodium tetrafluoroborate is one of the handiest reducing agents, especially for organic compounds in nonaqueous solvents. |
