Calcium Chloride is a solid salt at room temperature that behaves as a typical ionic halide. In the USA most calcium chloride is obtained by purification of brine. It is an odorless, hydroscopic, colorless, or white crystalline solid that sinks and mixes with water. The ionic compound is highly toxic, harmful if swallowed, causes serious eye damage, and exposure may cause respiratory irritation. It is not combustible but gives off irritating or toxic fumes or gases in a fire. Calcium chloride is used as an additive in plastics and in fire extinguishers, as a drainage aid in wastewater treatment, as an additive to control scaffolding in blast furnaces, and in fabric softener as a thinner. Although Calcium Chloride can be produced directly from limestone, large quantities are also produced as a by-product of the Solvay process. Because of its hygroscopic nature, the hazardous compound must be kept in tightly-sealed containers. |
