Description | ||
---|---|---|
Sulfuric acid is a non-flammable, strongly corrosive, oily liquid that is colorless to dark brown in color, depending on the purity. Although it is odorless, the compound has a marked acidic taste. It is miscible with water and ethanol, with the generation of much heat. When stored under recommended conditions sulfuric acid is stable. Sulfuric acid is produced using a contact process. A gas mixture containing sulfur dioxide (SO2) is passed together with oxygen over a catalyst to oxidize the sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide which is then absorbed in sulfuric acid where it reacts with added water to form more sulfuric acid. The United States produces more sulfuric acid than any other chemical. |
