These products are used as binders in the manufacture of brake and clutch linings, abrasive products, non-woven textiles, formed parts produced by molding processes, and fireproof materials. Hexamine, also known as Hexamethylenetetramine is an odorless, white crystalline powder or colorless lustrous crystal. The flammable solid heterocyclic organic compound sublimes in a vacuum at about 505° F with some decomposition. The compound is considered toxic and may be harmful by inhalation, ingestion or skin absorption. It is an irritant of the skin, eyes, mucous membranes and upper respiratory tract. Hexamethylenetetramine is prepared by combining formaldehyde and ammonia. The reaction can be conducted in gas phase and in solution. |
